The RAMBAM's Thirteen Principles

THE THIRTEEN PRINCIPLES OF EMUNAH ("Steadfast Faithfulness")

1)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, creates and guides all creatures, and that He alone made, makes, and will make everything.

2)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, is unique, and there is no uniqueness like His in any way, and that He alone is our G-d, Who was, Who is, and Who will always be.

3)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, is not physical and is not affected by physical phenomena, and that there is no comparison whatsoever to Him.

4)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, is the very first and the very last.

5)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name -- to Him alone is it proper to pray, and it is no proper to pray to any other.

6)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that all the words of the prophets are true.

7) I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that the prophecy of Moses our teacher, peace be with him, was true, and unique; he was the father of the prophets -- both those who preceded him and those who followed him.

8)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that the entire Torah now in our hands is the same one that was given to Moses, our teacher, peace be upon him.

9)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that this Torah will not be exchanged nor will there be another Torah from The Creator, Blessed is His Name.

10)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, knows all the deeds of human beings and their thoughts, as it is said, Psalms (Tehillim) 33:15: "He fashions their hearts all together, He comprehends all their deeds."

11)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, rewards with good those who observe his commandments, and punishes those who violate His commandments

12)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness in the coming of the Messiah, and even though he may delay, nevertheless I anticipate, every day, that he will come.

13)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that there will be a resurrection of the dead whenever the wish emanates from The Creator, Blessed is His Name and exalted is His mention, forever and for all eternity.

NOTE: Normally the Hebrew word "emunah" is translated as "faith", thus this section could be entitled "THE THIRTEEN PRINCIPLES OF FAITH."  But just as various off-shoot religions have confiscated and redefined the terms "Mashiach (messiah)", "yeshuah (salvation)", amongst many others, so too have these off-shoots redefined the word "faith."  We would suggest that if one would like to know how to best define a word, he should go to the text in question -- in this case the Jewish Scriptures -- and see how the word is used.  If we do this with the word "emunah" we discover that it does not have the "blind-faith" connotation that has been suggested by the off-shoots.  The very first time we find the word "emunah" in the Jewish Scriptures is Exodus (Shemos) 17:12 -- But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady ("emunah") until the going down of the sun.  From this verse we see that the word "emunah" implies "steadfastness" -- a consistency in action.  "Emunah" implies "faithfulness" and the Jewish scriptures, to be properly understood, should be translated with this definition of "emunah" in mind.  [A favorite verse, quoted by the off-shoots, is from the prophet Habakkuk (Chavakkuk) 2:4 --  Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith ("emunah").  After taking the correct definition of "emunah" into account, this verse should be understood: "...the tzaddik (the righteous person) shall live (in this world, and deserve reward in the next world) by his steadfast faithfulness (to that which he knows to be true)."]  With this definition of "emunah" in mind, let us begin with  Maimonides' Thirteen PRINCIPLES.

Preface to the Rambam's Principles:

Psalms (Tehillim) 119:30 I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.

Psalms (Tehillim) 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.

Exodus (Shemos) 20:2 I am the LORD thy G-d, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. [Deuteronomy (Devarim 5:6 I am the LORD thy G-d, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.]

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our G-d the LORD is one.

Psalms (Tehillim) 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

Habakkuk (Chavakkuk) 2:4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

Leviticus (Vayikra) 18:5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.

HaShoah (The Holocaust) (Verses which, our Sages teach us, foretell of cataclysmic events, akin to the Holocaust, which were prophesied to happen to the Jewish people during her exile form the Land of Israel):

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 31:17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our G-d is not among us? 18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy G-d with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Song of Songs (Shir HaShirim)8:6 Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. 7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

Malachi 1:2 I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,

Psalms (Tehillim) 44:23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

Zechariah 8:2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury.

The THIRTEEN PRINCIPLES OF EMUNAH (Throughout the 3350 year history of Israel, Judaism has never differentiated between concept and application -- between instruction and performance.  But as off-shoot religions laid claim to the Jewish scriptures, represented themselves as the "true Israel", and began to spread their speculative philosophies and dogmatics as "facts",  our Sages acknowledged the need for defining the "ikkarim" (principles) of Judaism.  The 'Thirteen Principles of Faith' are based upon the Rambam's (Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon's) "Commentary to The Mishnah" (Meseches Sanhedrin, Perek (Chapter) 10.)

The first five Principles deal with the Torah Concept of G-d (The nature of, and belief in, G-d):

1)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, creates and guides all creatures, and that He alone made, makes, and will make everything. (G-d's existence: There was no partnership in creation.  HaShem was the only Creator, and His creation continues to exist ONLY through His continuing Will.  His existence is independent of creation, and if all else came to and end, He would still be.  According to Yiddishkeit (Judaism), it is not comprehendible that there could be any form of existence not dependent upon Him.)

2)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, is unique, and there is no uniqueness like His in any way, and that He alone is our G-d, Who was, Who is, and Who will always be. (HaShem is a perfectly singular unity.  He cannot be understood as a compilation of limbs and organs, akin to mankind or the animals.  He cannot be dissected into parts or elements, while His creation can be "broken-down" into "ingredients" and the like.  The concept of His total oneness is expressed in the Sh'ma: Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD, our G-d, the LORD is one ("echad").)

3)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, is not physical and is not affected by physical phenomena, and that there is no comparison whatsoever to Him. (Hashem's being cannot be understood in human terms.  We, as physical beings, are limited to imagining concepts on a physical level, and thus we cannot fathom a Being unbound by material constraints, or natural or physical laws.  The Jewish scriptures speak of G-d in anthropomorphic terms ONLY to allow physical beings to grasp spiritual concepts.)

4)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, is the very first and the very last. (HaShem is ETERNAL -- Just as He will ALWAYS BE, He ALWAYS WAS; He is also the FIRST and ONLY source of all physical existence. ALL physicality, by definition, has a moment when it came into existence -- thus before that MOMENT OF ORIGIN, the physical being did not exist.  This cannot be said of HaShem, as He exists outside of time and space, both of which are His creations.)

5)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name -- to Him alone is it proper to pray, and it is no proper to pray to any other. (Prayer should be directed toward G-d and G-d alone.  Idolatry -- the worship of, or praying to, any other "power" except G-d -- did not spring into existence in one moment, but rather was the result of a slow progression away from the recognition and worship of the One TRUE G-D.  Our Sages teach us that, after the Flood of Noah, idolatry had a very innocuous beginning.  There were those who found it difficult to pray to a G-d that had no form [see Principle #3], thus they began to pray toward G-d's ambassadors, His creations which seemingly had "power" over their lives; i.e. the sun, the moon, the stars & planets, etc.  These earliest "idolaters" understood that these "gods", in reality, had no power independent of the Source of all of the powers -- G-d -- but they took the easy path and worshiped something they could see, rather than accepting G-d as He is.  It was these "outdoor idolaters'" children and grandchildren who took the next step.  When it became "too difficult" to leave their dwellings in order to worship G-d's ambassadors, they began to make physical representations of those ambassadors thus making their worship more convenient.  These "indoor idolaters", though, still understood that they were worshipping the True G-d, but merely through a representation that they could set on the table.  It was these "indoor idolaters'" children and grandchildren who took the last and most destructive step away from G-d.  Yet still, our Sages teach us, this last step was seemingly innocent at its inception.  The children and grandchildren of the "indoor idolaters" didn't realize that mommy & daddy, or granny and gramps weren't "really" worshipping the statue on the table, and that they in reality were worshipping the One True G-d.  These innocent offspring of the "indoor idolaters" merely mimicked their elders, bowing down to idols of wood and stone, thus the recognizing and worshipping "powers" other that G-d became part of the world.)

The next four Principles deal with G-d's Revelation at Mt. Sinai (The Torah's authenticity, validity, and immutability):

6)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that all the words of the prophets are true. (This Principle teaches us that G-d indeed communicates with mankind.  In order for us the know what G-d's Will is, He must communicate that Will to us; this communication comes by way of a prophet.  HaShem told us He would communicate with us through prophets in His revelation at Sinai: Deuteronomy 18:15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; 16 According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. 17 And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. 18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. 20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.)

7) I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that the prophecy of Moses our teacher, peace be with him, was true, and unique; he was the father of the prophets -- both those who preceded him and those who followed him. (This Principle teaches us that Moses was UNIQUE amongst the prophets.  His prophecy was not only different in quantity, but more importantly in QUALITY.  This principle is important because it teaches us that no other prophet can change or contradict the prophecy of Moses.)

8)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that the entire Torah now in our hands is the same one that was given to Moses, our teacher, peace be upon him. (Not only was the Torah dictated by G-d directly to Moses, but, this Principle teaches us, the text of the Torah scrolls we have today, is the same which HaShem gave over to Moses 3350 years ago.  This Principle also implies that each and every verse of the Torah is relevant; there are no "unimportant" verses.  Furthermore, this Principle applies equally to the Oral Torah, the explanation of the Written Torah, which also was given over to Moses at Mount Sinai.)

9)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that this Torah will not be exchanged nor will there be another Torah from The Creator, Blessed is His Name. (This Principle states that because both the Written and Oral Torahs were given to us by G-d, they cannot be improved upon, and neither can their concepts be added to, nor subtracted from.)

The Last four Principles deal with the Torah Concept of Reward & Punishment (Mankind's responsibilities, and G-d's promised rewards):

10)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, knows all the deeds of human beings and their thoughts, as it is said, Psalms (Tehillim) 33:15: "He fashions their hearts all together, He comprehends all their deeds." (This Principle teaches us that all our thoughts, words, and deeds are known to our Creator, and that He as our "Father", is interested in our every inclination and motivation.  The Principle also implies that G-d fashions together all of our free-will words and deeds in such a way that His Will be done, no matter how far from that Will our individual actions might be.)

11)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that The Creator, Blessed is His Name, rewards with good those who observe his commandments, and punishes those who violate His commandments. (This Principle teaches us that all of the thoughts, words and deeds, referred to in the previous Principle, are judged by G-d according to the extent of their righteousness or wickedness.  How we conduct ourselves IS important, and one cannot erase an evil deed with a good deed -- all deeds are brought into judgment.  Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole of man. 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good, or evil.)

12)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness in the coming of the Messiah, and even though he may delay, nevertheless I anticipate, every day, that he will come. (This Principle teaches us that we are to conduct ourselves in such a way that we are ever-ready for the coming of the Messianic Age, and that no matter how long it seems to be taking for his arrival, that G-d will indeed bring him.  Also implied in this principle is the fact that the Messiah can ONLY come from the House of David.)

13)  I Believe with Steadfast Faithfulness that there will be a resurrection of the dead whenever the wish emanates from The Creator, Blessed is His Name and exalted is His mention, forever and for all eternity. (This Principle teaches us that, associated with the Messianic Age, there will be a resurrection from the grave of those whom G-d will judge worthy of the privilege.)

What follows is a listing of verses from the Jewish Scriptures (Tanakh) which support each the the Rambam's 13 Principles (please understand that this area of our web-site will be "under construction" for many months if not years to come as the commentaries on Maimonides' Thirteen Principles are extensive, and will not be soon exhausted).

Judges (Shoftim) 2:17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.

I Kings (Melachim I) 9:6 But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them:

II Kings (Melachim II) 17:7 For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their G-d, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,

II Kings (Melachim II) 17:35 With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:

Jeremiah (Yirmiyahu) 44:3 Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.

The concept of His total oneness is expressed in the Sh'ma: Deuteronomy 6:4 ("echad").)

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our G-d is one LORD:

I Chronicles (Divrei HaYamim I) 17:21 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom G-d went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?

Numbers (Bamidbar) 23:9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 26:17 Thou hast avouched the LORD this day to be thy G-d, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice: 18 And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments;

And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me. 23 And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders; 24 And ye said, Behold, the LORD our G-d hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that G-d doth talk with man, and he liveth. 25 Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our G-d any more, then we shall die. 26 For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living G-d speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 18:15 The LORD thy G-d will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; 16 According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy G-d in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my G-d, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

I Samuel (Shmuel I) 10:6 And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 13:5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your G-d, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy G-d commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.

Leviticus (Vayikra) 17:3 What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that killeth an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp, 4 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD; blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people:

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 12:13 Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest:

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 29:28 And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.

I Samuel (Shmuel I) 3:19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Daniel even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

Jonah (Yonah) 4:2 And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious G-d, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

Jonah (Yonah) 3:10 And G-d saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and G-d repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 6:16 Ye shall not tempt the LORD your G-d, as ye tempted him in Massah.

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 4:33 Did ever people hear the voice of G-d speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live? 34 Or hath G-d assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your G-d did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is G-d; there is none else beside him. 36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 4:9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; 10 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy G-d in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children. 11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 4:32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that G-d created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it? 33 Did ever people hear the voice of G-d speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?

Exodus (Shemos) 19:9 And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.

Exodus (Shemos) 20:20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for G-d is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

Exodus (Shemos) 33:16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

Exodus (Shemos) 33:17 And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

Deuteronomy (Devarim) 34:10 And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

Exodus (Shemos) 33:20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? 5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice. 6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him. 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. (This Principle teaches us that, associated with the Messianic Age, there will be a resurrection from the grave of those whom G-d will judge worthy of the privilege.)

I Kings (Melachim I) 17:17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. 18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of G-d? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? 19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. 20 And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my G-d, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son? 21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my G-d, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. 24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of G-d, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.

II Kings (Melachim II) 4:18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. 19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother. 20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. 21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of G-d, and shut the door upon him, and went out. 22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of G-d, and come again. 23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well. 24 Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee. 25 So she went and came unto the man of G-d to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of G-d saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: 26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well. 27 And when she came to the man of G-d to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of G-d said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not told me. 28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me? 29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child. 30 And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her. 31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked. 32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. 33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. 34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. 35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. 36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. 37 Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.

And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. 4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. 8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them. 9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army. 11 Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts. 12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves, 14 And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.
